Story Line

Those Who Fall: An Unforgettable Chronicle of War in the Air is written by John Muirhead, a former U.S. Army Air Forces B‑17 Flying Fortress pilot. Stationed in Italy with the 301st Bomb Group, he flew bombing missions over northern Italy, Germany, Romania and Bulgaria before being shot down over Bulgaria, captured, and held as a prisoner of war. This is his first book, based on his own wartime experiences.

This non‑fiction memoir recounts Muirhead’s service as a heavy bomber pilot in World War II and his subsequent time as a POW. He describes mission planning and long flights from Italian bases, formation flying in B‑17s, flak and fighter attacks over targets such as the Ploiești oil fields, and the chaotic moments when his aircraft was finally shot down. The narrative then follows him through capture, interrogation, imprisonment, and the struggle to maintain morale and identity in captivity. Reviewers emphasize the vividness of his writing and imagery, noting that the book conveys not only the terror and violence of air combat, but also its boredom, strange beauty, dark humor, and the psychological dislocation of war in the air.
